The company was started in the early 1990s by the late John Matternas, a veteran insurance executive who was active in the development of niche insurance programs as well as captives and other alternative risk transfer models. The company was built on the STRENGTH of his 60-year tenure in the insurance industry. John started out in Philadelphia as a cub salesman for Liberty Mutual at a time when the salesmen (there were no women!) wore hats and rode the streetcar to their appointments. In his career, he worked for a mutual company and a stock company, owned retail agencies and a captive management firm, all culminating in the formation of Intercorp in 1991.
Since then, we have developed and managed programs as diverse as pollution insurance for dry cleaners and inland marine insurance for numismatic dealers. The common thread in all our programs is creativity in crafting coverages needed by a specific group or class, strong underwriting discipline, and targeted marketing.

We are a privately-owned company staffed by a dedicated group of insurance professionals who create, market, and manage business insurance programs. Long-term employees (more than half of our staff are 10-year-plus veterans) provide the STABILITY in our motto – Strength, Stability, Service.
President Scott Barry joined Intercorp in 2004 after successfully setting up a captive services unit for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and 12 years as senior vice president of underwriting for a large national insurance company specializing in programs. He started his career on the claims side and brings more than 30 years of insurance experience to his role at Intercorp. Scott’s contacts and relationships in the industry guarantee that we are providing our clients with the best carrier resources for their members.
Association, communication, and marketing experience, together with 25 years in the insurance industry, form the background of agency principal Elaine Matternas, former Editor & Publisher of Association Management magazine, published by the American Society of Association Executives. Elaine works with Intercorp’s network of independent agents to make sure our programs are on target and meeting their needs, and she also manages Intercorp’s operations.
Lori Donmoyer heads up Intercorp’s accounting and bookkeeping operations, having joined the staff as a bookkeeper in 2001. She also oversees office management and supervises the company’s IT operations. Lori’s background before Intercorp was in human resources and payroll accounting with a local manufacturing firm.
Katie Kurtz joined Intercorp in 2002, and a year later began working with the Real Estate Appraiser Program, which she now manages along with programs for Home Inspectors and Appraisal Management Companies, providing a depth of experience and stability for all three programs. Katie came to Intercorp from Hershey Chocolate Company, where her experience with streamlined production procedures has been transferred to our quoting, binding, and policy issuance process.
Three members of Intercorp’s staff comprise our “Class of 2013,” all having joined the company in that year:
Elaine Goldman handles customer service duties for all program areas and works with professional liability brokerage accounts. She also works on marketing initiatives (including our website), email communications with agents and clients, and other special projects. Elaine’s background includes five years of experience with a local insurance agency, along with administrative positions in the nonprofit, medical, and employment fields.
Karen Martzall provides underwriting and customer service support to all program areas, works with environmental brokerage accounts, and manages our dry cleaner pollution book of business. Karen had 12 years of experience with a local agency before joining Intercorp. She also has the CISR (Certified Insurance Service Representative) and CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor) designations.
Jannette Centeno provides underwriting and customer service support for the Real Estate Appraiser program and Home Inspector program. She also manages our Storage Tank program. Jannette came to Intercorp after eight years with the CNA Insurance office in Reading, working in policy services and as a client specialist.
The voice of Intercorp is our receptionist, administrative assistant, and all-around support staff of one: Pat Lutz. Pat joined the company in 2010 after a long career in customer service and administrative positions with D&E Telephone Company (now Windstream). If you have never called our office, you should do so just to hear Pat’s warm and welcoming voice, peppered with hearty laughter that most certainly projects via phone lines. And most likely, Pat will be able to answer your question – or will be able to find someone who can!
In addition to our team of experienced staff members, we are supported by several specialists who handle specific assignments on a regular or as-needed basis, expanding the depth and breadth of our staff capabilities. These include an experienced commercial underwriter who provides underwriting guidance on all programs, drafting policy language, writing underwriting guidelines, creating rating models, and performing internal audits; a technology consultant, part of a larger IT firm that configures/manages our network and troubleshoots problems, including security issues; and marketing and design services.
